Midnight Man
by Arthur Davis

Midnight.
++++Yeah, I’m okay with midnight.
++++I know all about midnight. Go ahead, ask me anything you want about midnight. I got the answers.
++++I am the man with the answers. That’s me.
++++A black man with the answers?
++++That’s a man to fear.
++++I’m the best at midnight. All those shapers out there claiming my turf? A bunch of lowlife pretenders trying to move up the ladder. Point is, what you gotta understand is that none of them are going to pass on me. Not with what I know about midnight.
++++My knowledge ain’t for sale, just like my word, so you can keep coming at me and you’re going to fail like all the other chickenshit pretenders.
++++And I did it on my own.
++++That’s right, Clarence, you fat white fucker.
++++And all on my own with no help from anybody. Not my family or others, who looked the other way when I came to them for help. None of them stepped forward.
++++To listen and deal with me.
++++To make a difference with me.
++++And now you’re going to murder the golden goose? For all your crap smart talk you’re no closer to the answer than you were last year or last month or five minutes ago.
++++Steeped in your ignorance and corruption, the finality behind midnight is mine alone.
++++So, with that, I’ve said enough. I will go to my maker with what I know, and I will be welcomed into the pearly gates with open arms and a smile, and I will tell him, my him, my spirit and soul, how midnight brought me to his doorstep.
++++And I will be relieved of my burden, while you’re down here in the squalor of your own deceit.
++++Because, you see, I did you all in.
++++Including the cops and the lying, conniving lawyers.
++++All of you big deal assholes with your suits and smug looks as though you had the right to exploit my midnight?
++++I look up now and all I see is greed. Souls rotting. A swarm of frantic vultures expecting me give up what I know.
++++So, in three minutes I will take what I know and what it could mean to the rest of you festering mongrels and your future, but midnight will not be revealed to you.
++++You would corrupt it.
++++You would make it bow to falsehoods and fabrications.
++++You would squeeze it dry of hope and kick it to the gutter of your filth as it was about to die.
++++Your evil is the greater od any evil I could imagine.
++++My evil is simple greed, while yours is corrupt to center of your blackened hearts. You think I don’t know who you all are and what you stand for and what you want from us?
++++You actually expect me to hand over the secret to midnight?
++++You thought you could break me.
++++Crush my will.
++++Destroy my spirit.
++++Cave in to your ruthless brutality.
++++You all thought that.
++++Every one of you soulless white custard bastards banded together like howling devils, and yet you couldn’t break me, so, instead you had to find a way to bury me.
++++And you did. Innocence and all.
++++And what you don’t understand, is that it’s the path I chose, not you.
++++In all your finery and power and positions, you think you can lord it over me with so little time remaining.
++++Yeah, I can read what time it is.
++++You, as I, will go to the grave together.
++++But I will be in heaven, and you will live out your empty existence surrounded by darkness and fire such as you can’t imagine. That’s the destiny you chose, as I chose mine.
++++I can see your horns and red forked tails.
++++I can smell the stench of your cowardice.
++++The stink of your rotting heart empowers me to my beliefs. To my faith. To the sanctity and power of my being and to the depth of my innocence. Something you couldn’t abide.
++++The world will soon grieve of my ending. A grief that will rise among you and crush you like you tried to crush me.
++++Like you told the world in the rampant ugliness of your lies.
++++As I leave, you will all be remembered for your failures.
++++Forever.
++++“It’s midnight. It’s time, gentlemen,” I heard Clarence, the Captain of the death team, announce to all those cowards present in the chamber, his hand resting on the switch.
++++My chest, head, arms, hands, and feet were tightly secured to the wooden chair with heavy leather belts. A bald spot was shaved on my head. A metal cap was strapped over my head. My legs had been shaved below my knees.
++++“Pull the switch. Do it now,” I demanded in a muffled growl through the leather gag lashed across my mouth.
++++I smiled at the fuckers behind the one-way glass partition, took a final breath, and heard a faint buzz right before my chest exploded.
++++My prayers had been answered.
++++My head snapped back and the world went dark except for the eternal glow of my innocence.
