He was walking in his uniform, the slouch hat on and his boots felt heavy on the hot asphalt on a thirty-plus day. Some young hippy girl with long, light brown hair and a severe fringe spat at him and called him a dog. He remembered that she wore a brown suede Jacket with tassels on it. He looked into her eyes, the most beautiful brown eyes, and she was laughing, having fun. It was the ignorance Ray couldn’t stand. He didn’t volunteer. His number got picked and it was prison or Vietnam. Ray had a rough idea of what prison was like, so it was Vietnam. It was tough there. Sure, there was weed and beer and some good mates (pricks too, though) plus the girlie bars as a distraction. Heroin too but he didn’t go there. That was his line in the sand.
